Session 9

Summary of Session 9: The challenges related to Force Planning.

Force Design and Force Structure are defined by the SANDF Joint Warfare Publication New Terminology (2000) as:

“The Force Design are those force structure elements in the force structure that constitute the combat units and the command and control required to fight effectively, of the SANDF.”

“The Force Structure of the DOD is the full organisational structure of the SANDF including combat units, operational command and control, support and administrative elements (POSTEDFIT).”

The concern is not about these two products per se, but on how to better arrive at these through planning, design and research as activities. The focus is on trends that will lead to new solutions given stagnant budgets, planning uncertainty, and complexity of modern military operations. More specifically it looks at international trends in the areas of capability-based planning, enterprise engineering and modelling and simulation.
