Summary of Session 2: Firepower and Engagement

In this session emerging science and technology factors are reviewed that may impact on firepower requirements of future. Developments in this field are discussed in four segments, i.e. direct and indirect fire, guided weapons, new developments in firepower and directed energy weapons.

The changing character of military operations in recent years has also dictated new requirements in the firepower field. Balancing requirements for operations other than war with those necessary to sustain a conventional capability is challenging. In this session the advances in technology that may impact on firepower is highlighted in the international context and also extrapolated to possible future requirements of the SANDF. While an overview of emerging international trends is given, areas of potential importance to the SANDF are covered in more detail.
